June 2020 Newsletter

When I launched with the idea of a nonprofit, most people (including me) could not grapple with the idea of a global pandemic. Shelter in place, social distancing, shuttered schools, unemployment, economic recession are all now realities in three short months. Apart from helping people in need, I was convinced that healthcare inequity in developing countries was a threat to developed ones and that the economic impact of these healthcare challenges is also significant. COVID-19 pandemic has given us a glimpse into the magnitude of this problem. I am naïve about what it takes to make the necessary change but wanted to start making the difference. We will continue to learn and grow in finding ways to help people in need all over the world.

Our amazing advisory board has been supportive offering their counsel and here is what we have achieved to date.

COVID Update: Many parts of the world are still battling the containment of the novel virus. Healthcare workers are at the front lines of communication, transmission prevention and treatment. In developing countries, authorities are unable to successfully position the pandemic as any different than current healthcare challenges due to the following:

• In Central America, shortages of reliable testing

• In South East Asia, stigmatization of COVID patients post recovery

• In West Africa, curtailing economic depression amidst healthcare crises

Although no one knows when normalcy will return or what the new normal is, it is apparent that developing countries will be disproportionately affected by this global pandemic. We cannot just look away.

Donations: Our effort to execute a Fall 2020in-person international medical program is tentative as all travels require two weeks quarantine to and from location. Donations received thus far will only have a greater impact when the time comes. We are using these moments as an opportunity to partner with local organizations dealing with the COVID crisis.

Personally, I have been involved in campaigns to praise and support healthcare workers through the American College of Healthcare Executives of New Jersey as the Co-Chair of Diversity and Inclusion.  Additionally, I have volunteered in numerous local food pantry collections and donated to families in needs.
Remain confident that your donations are going towards supporting lifesaving campaigns and we encourage you to tell people about Devoted Skies and our mission.
